- Epicurean canonics and physics unite in the conclusion that nothing comes from nothing or goes to nothing, even though the “atoms” from which things come, and to which things return, are not perceivable by the human sensations. This is a conclusion based on deductive reasoning from observations that the human sensations are able to make. As Epicurus states in the letter to Herodotus and Lucretius states very early in Book One of his poem, this conclusion forms the basis on which many other conclusions are reached by chain reasoning, all leading to the conclusion that the universe is entirely natural and neither created nor supervised by supernatural forces.
